Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview:

We are looking for wardens to support the hosts on our popular Lookout Lodge overnight experience. Wardens are responsible for ensuring the Lookout Lodge experience runs smoothly whilst our Hosts entertain our guests. This is a varied role and could involve front-of-house duties such as greeting guests or general maintenance of the lodge area to coordinating emergency situations e.g. providing first aid to a guest.

We understand that our visitors can be as varied as the amazing animals we have at ZSL and our Wardens are just as confident interacting with our youngest first time visitors as with our lifetime supporters. Your evenings will also be spent helping visitors get the most out of our exhibits, by supporting our Hosts as they lead and present a range of tours and talks to inspire, entertain and educate our audiences about the varied work of the ZSL.

Person Specification:

Ideally candidates will have:

  • Prior Front of house work or dealing with customers, visitors and guests face to face.
  • Good organisational/planning skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Prior experience working with the public.
  • Previous experience of dealing with emergency situations.
  • Prior experience of working with children is essential, ideally in an informal learning context.
  • A Full UK driving licence with Categories C1 +E (is desirable).
  • A First Aid at Work certificate/qualification (is desirable).

Please note: The role will be based on a rolling 2 week rota and include regular weekend working. You must be available to start in mid March with contracts ending at the end of October. Shifts are available between Wednesday and Sunday nights, from 4.15pm – 7.15am. Your shift is split into two parts. The first part will be supporting the hosts and guests on the tours around the zoo. The second part will be staying overnight on call in the Warden’s Lodge in case of an emergency. You will receive full support and training and will be supported by a night security guard and an on-call allowance will be paid.
