Position Title: Seasonal Fisheries Technician (up to 3 positions)
Organization: Trout Unlimited, Boise, ID
Dates of employment: approximately mid-June through early October 2011
Duty location: western Montana (Missoula area)

Responsibilities: The technicians participate in a research project to evaluate the relative effectiveness and cost of contrasting techniques for determining trout passage past remediated culvert road crossings.  The work involves using a combination of backpack electrofishing, mobile passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag antennas, and stationary PIT tag antennas to detect movement trout movement past remediated culverts as well as collecting tissue samples for individual-level assessment of movement using genetic markers.  Previous experience with electrofishing, operation of RFID (PIT-tag) antennas, and handling sensitive fish species is highly desirable.   Experience with data entry and database management (Excel, Access) is also helpful.

This is a field-based project in western Montana, and the positions require travel to and from research sites, frequent camping, and working long hours outdoors.

Salary: $2,000 per month, plus $20 per diem during fieldwork
