ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Conservation Practitioner 1 conducts public outreach and environmental education along with preserve maintenance at The Nature Conservancy’s Preserves in Cape May, NJ. 

This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Greet preserve visitors and provide information about The Nature Conservancy
  • Enforce preserve regulations.
  • Lead tours of the preserves highlighting success of habitat restoration efforts, flora, and fauna.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor, stewardship staff, and site volunteers
  • Assist with maintenance of the preserve including mowing, repairs to preserve infrastructure, invasive plant management, trash removal, posting signage, and water management.
  • Assist with the management and monitoring of several species of beach nesting birds.
  • Assist with patrols to detect and deter various forms of trespass, vandalism, attractive nuisance.
 
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • High school diploma and 6 months of related experience
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma and 6 months-1 year of related experience
  • Experience communicating effectively with members of the public, volunteers, co-workers and supervisors highly desirable
  • Experience identifying  plant and animal species highly desirable
  • Coursework or training in ecological and natural history concepts preferred
  • Degree in a natural science preferred
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, gps unit)
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
 
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 
  • Employment duration is May - November 2014.
  • Housing is available but it is over an hour from the work site.
  • A  flexible schedule including some evenings, all weekends and holidays if required.

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Conservation Practitioner I may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

These conditions:

  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
