Description

Seafood Sustainability Officer

Location : Living Planet Centre - Woking
Closing date : 12/10/2014
Salary : £24,000-£27,000 depending on experience
Employment type : Fixed Term

WWF is the world’s leading independent conservation organisation. We’re creating solutions to the most important environmental challenges facing the planet so people and nature can thrive. This involves working with businesses, communities and governments in over 100 countries. Together, we’re safeguarding the natural world, tackling climate change and enabling people to use natural resources sustainably. This is your opportunity to join us as we face our biggest challenges yet.

WWF is tasked with establishing conservation projects to reduce the ecological footprint of the seafood sourced through UK buyers. This focuses on the international supply chains of seafood into the UK especially tuna, white fish, shrimp, salmon and other popular species in the UK market. Our work aims to create change in governance, finance and markets for seafood. However, our work isn’t restricted to the UK – we also support WWF Global Initiatives focusing on priority areas such as Coastal East Africa.

This role is to provide technical support for the delivery of WWF’s Seafood programme in the UK, and assist the seafood team on the wider engagement on fishery and aquaculture issues. You’ll complete science based assessments of fisheries and seafood farms to assess environmental impacts and identify suitable improvement work. Using your knowledge of fisheries and aquaculture regulations and standards, you’ll liaise and support our global WWF network and stakeholders to advocate for changes that will deliver sustainability and a reduction in impact on the environment. This change will be created through the implementation of projects and programmes that will improve management and harvest practices, and will build capacity. The post holder will work on national and international projects, and encourage support for the programme across a broad range of interest groups including; retailers; processors; government representatives; and partners in the NGO community.

We’re looking for a team player with suitable knowledge of fisheries and aquaculture practices who is working towards a career in sustainable resource management and conservation. The ideal candidate will have a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent experience, as well as being proficient in drafting proposals and achieving results to deadline. The individual will be able to communicate confidently with a wide variety of stakeholders and be able to deal discretely with confidential information. If you think this is the role for you, apply now!

This is a 4 year fixed term post.

Closing Date: 12 October 2014

Interview Date: 22 October 2014

At WWF-UK we are committed to creating an inclusive working environment, where diversity is valued and there is equality of opportunity. We therefore welcome applications from all sections of the community and we offer a range of benefits to encourage a work life balance.
