SeaWeb is looking for an enthusiastic person to support our seafood sustainability and ocean conservation work. SeaWeb’s Seafood Choices program works internationally to cultivate joint seafood sustainability solutions amongst commercial, legislative, and environmental stakeholders.

Position Summary: This internship would be suitable for someone interested in learning more about marine conservation and food sustainability issues, stakeholder engagement, communications tactics and events organization. The candidate will have the opportunity to input your ideas into the work and also participate in some events. This position will also provide insight into working for a mission-driven environmental not-for-profit organization and provide exposure to sustainability leaders. The Seafood Choices Program Intern is an unpaid position, however basic travel and lunch expenses will be covered (approx. $15/day). The position will be based in SeaWeb’s Silver Spring, MD Office. The hours are flexible, though ideally the candidate would be available for 3 - 4 days per week. Closing date for applications is February 27th 2012.

Responsibilities: 
• Researching sustainable seafood developments domestically and in Asia.
• Supporting new marketing/outreach activities for the program.
• Tracking and recording sponsorship outreach for key projects such as the Seafood Summit.
• Assisting in the development of publications and online communications (including website, e-newsletters, and social media).
• Providing support for media activities and outreach; including tracking media coverage and updating event calendars.

Desired Skills and Qualities:
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, marine conservation, public relations or communications (or related).
• Knowledge of domestic and international and fisheries issues and associated policy.
• Interest in sustainable seafood and associated topics.
• Understanding of conservation issues and interest in the mission of SeaWeb.
• Understanding of strategic communications and behavior change/social marketing.
• Computer literacy, knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media tools such as Google +, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. 
• Experience with Macintosh operating systems a plus.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and self-motivate while also being a strong and amicable team player.
• A positive attitude and superior inter-personal skills.
