Description

SeaChoice is a national program to help Canadian businesses and consumers take an active role in supporting healthy oceans by making more sustainable seafood choices. SeaChoice partners– the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, David Suzuki Foundation, Ecology Action Centre, Living Oceans Society, and Sierra Club BC– work in partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium to provide science-based assessments that rate the sustainability of domestic and imported seafood products based on biological, ecological, and management factors.

Launching initially with Canada’s Seafood Guide, our program has expanded to work with national businesses. We now offer a variety of educational resources as well as help identifying and promoting sustainable seafood in the marketplace. Our goal is to promote the most sustainable options available today, while creating incentives for improvements that can be achieved through industry and policy reforms.

We are looking to further expand our reach in major cities across Canada by training SeaChoice interns that will provide support for outreach events and offer on-the-ground information on sustainable seafood happenings in their city. Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto are our initial priority. These are unpaid positions which will entail an average of four hours work per week. Volunteers who can make a minimum commitment of three months are preferred.

Intern Roles:

•   Working with the National SeaChoice Manager and member groups to organize and support outreach and educational events (two per month)

•   Assisting with the development of outreach and educational materials

•   Providing research on local seafood availability

•   Creating online content that highlights sustainable seafood options available in your area and where to find them

Opportunities:
•    To work with five of the major marine non-governmental organizations in Canada
•    To develop a broad understanding of fisheries, aquaculture, and sustainability issues

•    To build your outreach and communication skills

•    To play an important role in the implementation and growth of Canada's national sustainable seafood program

Skills:

•   Interest and understanding of environmental and marine conservation

•   Strong interpersonal skills and comfortable talking with the public in an outreach role
•   Self starter and ability to work well independently after initial training and support
•   Attention to detail and good communication skills (writing and public speaking)
