Five internationally respected Canadian conservation organizations—Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecology Action Center, Living Oceans Society and Sierra Club BC—formed SeaChoice in 2005 to work together for healthy oceans.  SeaChoice is a comprehensive sustainable seafood program that works across Canada with seafood businesses and consumers to promote the procurement and sale of sustainable seafood.  The SeaChoice program includes research on the status of Canadian fisheries and aquaculture, public education, business partnerships, strategic media and web communications, development of fisheries policy reform initiatives, and liaison with other sustainable seafood initiatives and organizations that are working on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture policy reform.

On behalf of the SeaChoice program, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society- BC Chapter (CPAWS-BC) is currently seeking to fill the following position: National Program Manager.
Time Period: April 1, 2011-May 31, 2012 (with a possibility of extension)

Working with the SeaChoice Steering Committee, the National Manager will play a lead role in overseeing implementation of the SeaChoice strategic plan, and ensuring collaboration and participation of all member organizations. This position has a focus on administration and program development, but will also provide support for SeaChoice communications and business partnerships. This position will be based at the CPAWS-BC office in Vancouver.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the development of the strategic plan and work plans and ensure their implementation
  • Develop and track budgets
  • Maintain active relationships with member organization staff/contractors that are assigned to work on specific SeaChoice projects and activities
  • Manage contracts to ensure successful implementation of the SeaChoice strategic plan
  • Ensure consistent communications among teams working on various program areas
  • Supervise the work of SeaChoice staff
  • Provide liaison with and coordination among steering committee representatives, including organizing monthly meetings, developing agendas, maintaining meeting minutes, and coordinating program activity reports
  • Recruit, hire and work with outside contractors
  • Work with the communications team to develop and implement an outreach and communication plan (including event organization and creation of outreach tools)
  • Maintain, update and continue the development of the SeaChoice website
  • Maintain, update and organize files/messages on the SeaChoice working staff intranet
  • Serve as lead contact for the program, respond to inquiries and coordinate communications and media requests
  • Help build an enhanced national media presence for SeaChoice
  • Develop funding opportunities for SeaChoice and participate in writing grant applications
  • Coordinate and develop regular reports to funders
  • Assist SeaChoice in developing relationships with business partners, including restaurants/chefs and fisherman across Canada
  • Identify networking opportunities with other relevant groups/associations and develop these relationships to further the SeaChoice program outreach and awareness
  • Assist in the preparation of communications on behalf of the member organizations (e.g. drafting invitations, press releases, and media summaries)
  • Provide regular reports on emerging issues and news to the steering committee
  • Lead and coordinate engagement with key funders and ENGO partners
  • Organize and liaise with volunteers

Qualifications:

  • Strong conservation ethic (with a focus on marine environments preferred)
  • Professional, resourceful, patient, friendly, and highly self-motivated team player with excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective cooperative relationships
  • High degree of administrative skills
  • Proven research and writing skills, with previous grant writing experience
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Previous management experience of a non-profit organization is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the seafood industry would be an asset
