Position Based in: Vancouver
Term: 37.5 hours per week until March 18, 2011
Starting Date: ASAP

Living Oceans Society (LOS) is looking for a post secondary graduate to engage as a communications intern to play a key supporting role in the successful SeaChoice sustainable seafood program. This internship will provide the opportunity for a creative and committed young person to learn first hand about sustainability marketing to consumers, retailers, wholesalers, restaurants and businesses.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of communications strategies and tactics for sustainable seafood campaigns
  • Assist with the preparation and production of print, visual, video and audio materials for web-based, on-line and broadcast and print media
  • Contribute to the development and production of video and audio recordings, photos and images concerning sustainable seafood to reach key target audiences  
  • Contribute to on-line communications, including such as blogs, social networking sites, web pages, and other interactive web-based communications
  • Contribute to the development of work plans, production schedules in order to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Assist with coordination and implementation of communications outreach activities, such as media and press conferences, press briefings, trade fairs, consumer, industry and business presentations, etc.

Role and Responsibilities
The  intern will be integrated into the Living Oceans Society staff team and participate actively in:

  • Meetings and communications with environmental, business and restaurant partners in the SeaChoice program
  • Learning more about sustainability marketing in Canada and the US
  • Engaging in national and international efforts to promote sustainable seafood and sustainable fisheries
  • Improving practical communications skills through participating in developing and selecting strategies, tactics, tools, identifying key target audiences and appropriate messages
  • Assist with developing marketing materials related to sustainable seafood for local, regional and national consumers, retailers, wholesalers and businesses in Canada
  • Developing SeaChoice outreach materials for children and youth.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in communications, video production, journalism, marketing, film, English or related field.
  • Interests, skills and experience with developing printed publications
  • Writing, editing and proof reading skills in English and French will be considered assets
  • Creativity and enthusiasm for Web 2.0, on-line media, social media, citizen journalism and on-line applications - savvy with new media and social networking
  • Some skills and experience or interest in audio and video recording, shooting, editing and production will be considered assets
  • Commitment to the Living Oceans Society and SeaChoice sustainable seafood values and programs
  • Some experience and rapport with children and youth will be considered assets
  • Organizational skills and the ability to learn to coordinate multiple tasks and manage time effectively, meeting timelines and budget guidelines
  • Good team player, flexible work style and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Fearlessness, creativity, initiative and perseverance will be considered assets.

Please note: All candidates must enroll and meet the eligibility requirements of the Post Secondary Youth Eco Internship Program of the YMCA.  Successful candidates must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years, unemployed and permanent residents or conferred with refugee protection and legally entitled to work in British Columbia, Canada and willing to participate in criminal record check through the YMCA.
