Team: LIFE Arcipelagu Garnija

Location of job: BirdLife Malta offices in Salini and Ta’ Xbiex

Post holder reports to: Project Manager

Overall purpose of the job: To carry out a range of duties related with seabird conservation in Malta as part of our LIFE Arcipelagu Garnija project. This will include: rodent control, monitoring of colonies, public awareness activities on colony sites, compilation of data, mapping, and reporting.

Main Duties:

Field work and site management

  • Seabird colony monitoring: ringing, taking morphological measurements, nest monitoring, mist netting, call registrations at night, GPS mapping, colony and nest searching, deployment of trail cameras and sound recorders
  • Assessment of threats: predator presence, recreational activities, and others
  • Regular predator control in colony sites mainly involving rat control with bait stations including on steep cliffs

Data analysis

  • Office-based work to compile, process and analyse data collected in the field in Excel, Access, ArcGIS, and R software

Public relations and awareness

  • Carry out warden duties at key terrestrial locations to educate the public (campers, picnickers, and tourists) about shearwaters and their threats to encourage behavioural changes (e.g. discourage littering, barbecues on cliff tops, etc.).
  • Carry out warden duties at sea close to nesting sites to educate the public (boat users, fishermen) about shearwaters and their threats to encourage behavioural changes (e.g. noise pollution from boats, disturbing nest sites, etc.).
  • Assist in events, meetings and workshops

Reporting

  • Assist in the production of reports related to monitoring and conservation actions, nature permits, and others as necessary
