Description

Role: Tanjong Jara Site Co-Manager

Start Date: Mid-February 2020

Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW) was founded as a conservation organisation in 2013 with ambition and drive, and the aim to help save sea turtles from extinction, based on the East Coast of Malaysia. Initially founded on the island of Lang Tengah, the project expanded to the prestigious Tanjong Jara Resort in 2016 and to date has released more than 30,000 endangered hatchlings across both sites.

LTTW is looking for a passionate and engaging individual who already has some experience in the conservation sector and is looking to take on a managerial role. The role is based at our Tanjong Jara Resort project site in Dungun, Terengganu and provides the opportunity for hands on conservation work alongside public outreach and engagement. This is a crucial component of the Tanjong Jara project site, as we depend on the support of the resort and its guests – who are mostly international – to continue to expand our ability to save endangered turtle eggs from ending up as food in the marketplace.

LTTW operates a Visitors’ Hut and multiple hatcheries in collaboration with the resort. Your main role will be becoming an integral part of our team, working with the other staff members to ensure the smooth running of the project. Tasks may include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Assisting in coordinating, scheduling and overseeing the day-to-day running of the project site.
  • Helping to train and supervise interns throughout their 10-week placement.
  • Helping with our nest adoption programme: contacting local tender holders to purchase eggs otherwise being sold to the marketplace; signing up guests to the nest adoption programme; gathering photographs and sending out the nest adoption updates to the adoptees.
  • Helping to co-ordinate and carry out beach clean-ups and other outreach programmes involving local schools.Relocating sea turtle nests into our hatcheries.
  • Carrying out nest checks, hatchling releases and post hatch inspections.
  • Giving informative briefings to guests during these activities.
  • Checking data gathered during nest relocations, nest checks and post hatch inspections is being inputted correctly.
  • Being based at our Visitors’ Hut and being on hand to chat with resort guests and answer any questions.Ensuring the hatchery, visitors’ hut and our accommodation are kept clean and tidy at all times.
  • Liaising with Tanjong Jara Resort staff to inform them about hatchling releases, nest inspections etc.Liaising with local government and fisheries department about conservation issues.
  • Updating our social media pages.
  • Liaising with the Project Co-ordinator regularly to keep them updated with progress and developments.Sending weekly updates to other project sites with up to date developments at Tanjong Jara.
  • Assist in report writing mid and end of season reports.

Requirements:

  • Holding a related bachelors degree, or higher
  • Holding a valid drivers’ license
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to swim confidently
  • Previous experience in conservation fieldwork

Desirable:

  • Experience living and working with a small team, in an isolated environment
  • Good organisational skills
  • Previous experience in sea turtle conservation fieldwork

A background in sea turtle conservation is not essential and all training will be given on site. However, being well-informed on wildlife conservation more widely and aware of environmental issues is vital. The LTTW team at Tanjong Jara is a small, diverse team and it is important you are happy living and working in this setting.

There will be a two-month probation period during which you will be given an allowance each month and subjected to performance reviews. After this time, providing your probation period has been successful, there will be the opportunity to join the team as a full time, salaried staff member. Food and accommodation costs whilst on site, as well as in-country road travel to and from project sites will also be covered. You will be living in the staff quarters of the resort in our own private building, alongside our other team members. Although you will be based at our mainland project site there may also be opportunities to visit other project sites during the season. The season runs from mid-February until late October.

If you feel you’re the right person to be part of our young, passionate and dynamic team of conservationists, please send through a copy of your C.V., a cover letter and details of two referees to our Project Coordinator, Bella: bella@langtengahturtlewatch.org

This is a great opportunity to get involved with a small, growing organisation where your work has the chance to have a real impact on the success of the project, whilst having the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of the project.
