Project background: The beaches of El Mansouri and El Koliala are located on the south coast of Lebanon. They have been regularly monitored (each year) by a Lebanese team (Orange House Project) over the last decade. The monitoring effort has been enforced by the application of conservation strategies, such as individual nest protection, nest relocation, rubbish removal and public awareness. The nesting population is mainly composed of Caretta caretta, in addition to low levels of nesting by Chelonia mydas. The nesting site is under pressure from fox predation, fishing activities, pollution and uncontrolled tourism development. The main activities include monitoring nesting beaches, nest protection, data collection, data entry, emails and reports writing, environmental education for children and local people, awareness and education in the local B&B. Period: from 15th May to 30th September 2012 Duties: - Data collection on the field under supervision of the project supervisor. - Coordinating the monitoring aspect of the work according to Naucrates' and Orange House Project’ methodology; ensuring that all data collected is correctly collected and entered in databases - Implementing nest protection measures as per the guidelines issued by Naucrates and Orange House project. These include relocating, protection (grid over nests) and hatching observation - Write progress reporting to project supervisor inItaly - Co-ordinating night surveys (if required) for observing nest hatching, protecting the hatchlings while going to the sea and taking biometric data - Digitalize all data and participate in the creation of the project final report - Awareness activities for children and tourists Requirements - Ideal candidates should: - be over 21 years of age - have experience in other turtle conservation projects (nest monitoring) - have good communication and human resource management skills - have a firm commitment to stay for the whole period of the project - be able to work independently with minimum supervision - be able to live in a remote environment in theMiddle East - have a good command of the English language (mandatory) - be in good physical condition since walking long distances (2 kms) and working for long hours under the heat of the sun is often needed - possess a BSc in Biology or a related field |
