Scientist (Postdoc) Physical Oceanography

Division:Climate Sciences

The AWI is a research facility funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the states Bremen, Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein with approximately 1,000 employees. In association with numerous universities and non-university research partners we largely contribute to global environmental, earth system and paleo climate research on a wide multi-disciplinary scale. The section Observational Oceanography invites applications for a

in the framework of the DFG-funded research unit: “Atlantic Ocean fresh-water Budgets and Transports”. The position at AWI will address “Variation of the fresh-water in the western Nordic Seas”

Background: The large fresh water input to the Arctic is transferred to the North Atlantic through the Nordic Seas where it has implications to the ocean circulation, deep water formation and sea level. The last decades showed significant changes of the fresh water yield and distribution in the Nordic Seas in relation to anomalies circulating through the North Atlantic. Future increase of the hydrological cycle and ice sheet degradation will increase the fresh water input to the high latitude ocean but the uncertainties of climate projections are huge.
The goal of this project is to document fluctuations of the fresh water in the western Nordic Seas and to understand the related processes.

The Task of the position is to carry out measurements using autonomous platforms such as gliders and wave gliders and to combine them with data from other ship-borne and remote sensing sources towards quantification of fresh water changes in the western Nordic Seas. Analysis will include existing data sets from the past decades. The candidate will work in a team that combines observations and numerical modelling. The work is embedded in international programmes. The candidate is expected to participate in scientific cruises.

Requirements:
We seek a person holding a PhD degree in physical oceanography or related disciplines. A solid background in fluid dynamics and experience with data are required, experience in sea-going work is desirable.

The position is limited to three years and located at the AWI site in Bremerhaven. The salary will be in accordance with the German “Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst” (TVöD Bund), salary group E13.

For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Ursula Schauer (ursula.schauer(at)awi.de).

The AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and therefore encourages women to apply. Handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given priority; please consult our homepage athttp://www.awi.de/en/news/open_positions/. The AWI supports the compatibility of work and family through various means and offers nursery places at its Bremerhaven site.
