Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Scientist to provide support to the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Conservation Biology Division, Montlake Laboratory. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species.

This project will focus on compiling data on the location, timing, and intensity of trawl fisheries for the purpose of understanding patterns of Chinook salmon bycatch by various trawl fleets. Information about salmon bycatch will be incorporated by scientists into statistical models for understanding the distribution of Chinook salmon by origin river, run type, and season. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to work with federal scientists to improve salmon harvest management in ways that will provide ecosystem benefits across species.

DUTIES

The individual shall provide the following services:

  • Work with NOAA researchers to organize trawl fisheries data for multiple fleets along the US west coast (California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska). Trawl fleets include those that target Pacific hake, the mixed stock west coast ground fish fleet, the three major Alaskan pollock fleets, the Alaskan rockfish and arrowtooth flounder fleets.
  • Collate available samples by sea fisheries observers, shore-based observers, and other samplers and code for wire tags in trawl bycatch for each fleet.
  • Collect and organize a dataset of coded wire tag recoveries of Chinook salmon from target Chinook salmon stocks in trawl fleets of the US west coast and Alaska.

Other Duties Include:

  • Organization of datasets containing information about the location, seasonality, and intensity of fishing effort from the above listed trawl fleets.
  • Organization of datasets containing information about sampling effort dedicated to coded wire tag detection in each trawl fleet in each year and how this information varies spatially.
  • Organization of datasets containing information for Chinook salmon coded wire tag releases and recoveries.

Average estimated hours per week are 15 to 30.

Start Date: September 3rd, 2018
