Description

Scientist / Programmer for Climate Policy Applications

About Climate Analytics

Climate Analytics gGmbH is a non-profit organization based in Potsdam, Germany. It has been established to synthesize climate science and policy research that is relevant for international climate policy negotiations. One of its aims is to provide scientific, policy and analytical support for Small Island States (SIDS) and the least developed country group (LDCs) negotiators, as well as non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders in the ‘post-2012’ negotiations.

Job description

The candidate will contribute to the CAT (www.climateactiontracker.org) and PREVENT (www.climateanalytics.org) or similar successor projects by analyzing on the one hand data on greenhouse gas emissions and other socio-economic data from the PRIMAP database (www.primap.org), and on the other hand analyzing scenario projections of climate change and its impacts. These activities require strong science and programming skills, and the candidate will be central to the project team's joint development of new modeling tools for responding to scientific and technical questions on reductions of greenhouse gas emissions, expected regional impacts, a country’s or sector's historical circumstances, cost estimates of specific reduction options, relationships between policy interventions and emissions, etc. The candidate will be directly involved in policy and science analyses by providing on-demand calculations and analysis, as well as co-developing user interfaces and tools for visualization, to allow non-programmers easy access to the database and model results.

The CAT project analyses and visualizes greenhouse-gas emission data and policies for countries worldwide and assesses the extent to which these are consistent with top-down and long-term goals of avoiding unsustainable levels of global warming. The PREVENT project provides scientific, policy and analytical support for negotiators in the international climate negotiations. Candidates participating in these projects can expect to gain considerable working experience firmly embedded in international climate-policy context, including ‘real-time’ analysis during negotiation sessions. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be introduced into high-level negotiations that depend on fast-response assessments with a strong link to longer-term scientific research.

The candidates will be expected to collaborate closely and work co-operatively with scientists working on the PRIMAP model (www.primap.org) at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, with whom Climate Analytics collaborates.  They will also have the skills and interests to contribute to scientific articles in peer reviewed journals based on their work.
