Description

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a scientist for its oceans program. The aim of the position is to advocate for the protection of marine life from threats including climate change, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, offshore oil development and destructive fisheries. Science is woven into our advocacy work and informs our legal strategies, policy advocacy, campaigning and public education.

The scientist will pair science with advocacy to promote marine conservation initiatives and conduct scientific and factual research to support ocean program campaigns and litigation. The position will also include policy advocacy and campaign activities that focus on conservation of endangered marine species and their habitats.

Main duties:

  • Write comments on environmental review documents and other agency proposals, the position will require extensive scientific and policy writing and periodic public testimony.
  • Secure state and federal protections for endangered marine species, including preparing scientific petitions to list species under the Endangered Species Act.
  • Provide factual and research support and analysis for legal and campaign work.
  • Develop and implement campaign activities to further conservation and policy objectives.
  • Track and respond to priority federal and state administrative actions.
  • Media advocacy, including writing press releases, media outreach and delivering effective statements to reporters.
  • Communicate with decision-makers, the public, scientists and opinion leaders on ocean issues through outreach and public speaking.
  • Build alliances with scientific, conservation and community groups.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum two years of professional experience in science, law, planning, public policy, campaigning or advocacy.
  • Completion of a degree in a relevant scientific field such as environmental science, marine biology, oceanography, conservation biology, ecology, environmental studies, climate science or other earth science.
  • Scientific literacy and familiarity with marine conservation literature is essential.
  • Familiarity with environmental law and policy preferred.
  • Excellent research, analytical and writing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking.
  • An ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong work ethic and time-management skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to environmental protection.
