NIWA is a leading provider of fisheries research and consultancy services for the Ministry of Fisheries and other interests in New Zealand and overseas. This position will involve the design, construction and calibration of acoustic survey equipment, development of methods for data processing and analysis, carrying out fisheries resource surveys at sea, and research on target identification and measurement of fish target strength. You will be heavily involved in data analysis, preparation of research tenders, presentation of results and writing of research reports and primary publications.

You must have good quantitative skills, with some formal training in acoustics, electronics, and statistics or mathematics. You should be familiar with at least one programming language, preferably C++, Matlab, or R. Previous experience in fisheries acoustics is essential.

You must be adaptable, practical and able to connect up instruments.  Being prepared to take part in acoustic surveys on research and commercial fishing vessels is essential.

A PhD is desirable, but candidates with a lower qualification and at least 5 years work experience in fisheries acoustics will be considered.
