urpose of the Job: To work as a member of the team in assisting with setting up and undertaking glasshouse, laboratory, nursery, field and plot experiments within ADAS R&D programmes on crop production/protection and agri-environmental issues.
Key Responsibilities will include:
· Assist research scientists in the planning and costing of new projects.
· Take the lead in delivering a number of assigned research projects.
· Responsible for the delivery of delegated projects to the protocol milestones
and procedures.
· Marking out and preparation of study sites to protocol requirements.
· Identify and organise staff resource required for assigned projects to ensure
work is delivered in a timely manner.
· Sampling of plants and growing media
· Collect, assess and process plant, soils and water samples.
· Carry out work as described in SOP’s and protocols such as treatment
applications, agronomic and crop damage scores.
· Collect data to AIMS standards.
· Input data onto computer systems.
· Validation, collation and management of data according to AIMS guidelines.
· Routine statistical analysis of data using Genstat software.
· Tabulation of results from analysis.
· Draft the methods and results sections of experiment reports.
· Responsible for liaising with host farmers and growers when undertaking
research projects, or collecting plant samples
· Maintain designated experimental facilities and maintenance and calibration of
equipment.
· Maintain stocks of designated consumables.
· Functionally manage colleagues and fee-paid staff whilst working on assigned
projects.
Personal Qualities, Skills and Experience:
· Ability to follow procedures and instructions in a meticulous approach.
· Good knowledge of agriculture and horticulture machinery operations, including
experience of operating tractors, machinery and preferably plot combines
· Laboratory or field experience
· Educated to at least Diploma level in agriculture, horticulture or other biological
science is essential.
· Spray certificate desirable (PA1 and PA6).
· Interpersonal skills - team player, able to communicate effectively with
colleagues and clients.
· Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
· A flexible approach to work.
· Organise work – able to prioritise work to ensure deadlines are met.
· Good numerical ability and accuracy.
· Experience of data handling and inputting.
· A full driving licence.
· Keyboard skills – knowledge of basic word processing and data entry
in Microsoft Word and Excel.
· Email experience and knowledge of using the Internet.
· Desire to learn new and varied skills.
Hours
Normal hours of work are 37 per week net of meal breaks. Normal office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. A flexible approach to work is needed, as there will be a requirement to work overtime (evenings and weekends) during busy periods.
