Interested in an opportunity to contribute to sustainable Fisheries Management in the South-West Atlantic? The Fisheries Department has a vacancy for a Scientific Fisheries Observer (Seabirds) to commence work from August 2013 onwards. This post is ideally suited to a Seabird Ecologist as the post holder will be directed to work on seabird interactions with fishing vessels with the aim of reducing seabird mortalities. The post will be largely sea-based (around 160-180 days at sea per annum), but also includes assisting with the training of other observers to collect seabird interaction data and the collation of relevant datasets for analyses. The successful applicant should be able to work effectively as part of a team or alone, have a good eye for detail, possess good decision-making skills and have the capacity to take a leading role in data collection, analysis and in finding novel ways in reducing trawler related bird mortalities. Applicants should: • Hold at least a BSc in a Zoological or Biological subject • Be computer literate • Be enthusiastic, and have the ability to work alone • Take a lead in finding novel ways in reducing trawler related bird mortalities This position offers: • Eligibility for a 15% gratuity payable on successful completion of the one year contract • Flights to and from the Islands at the start and end of the contract • 50 days holiday entitlement • Shared accommodation to rent when on land
