The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. We are currently seeking a scientific data manager to work at our modern complex of offices on the outskirts of Cambridge.
You will be based in the Polar Data Centre working as part of a team of data managers who are responsible for the management of data collected by UK funded scientists in the polar regions. Your main responsibility will be the management of geophysical data including multi and single-beam bathymetry, seismic, magnetic, gravity and radar data.
The successful candidate will have a range of IT skills ranging from the essentials such as Unix/Linux experience, programming skills and database design through to desirable skills such as experience of geophysical software packages, Geographic Information Systems and web application development. The role requires excellent attention to detail and strong communication and team working skills. You will be expected to document your progress and present your results to internal and external audiences.
This is a very diverse role which will allow you be involved in all aspects of the data life cycle from planning and acquisition through to analysis and dissemination. There are many opportunities to further develop the geophysical data holdings of the Survey and this role would suit someone with creative ideas and the initiative and skills to drive them forward.
The post is primarily based in Cambridge but you should be physically capable and medically fit to undertake marine cruises in polar regions of up to two months duration.
Qualifications: Degree or higher in a geoscience or data management subject area
Duration: The post is a open-ended, full-time appointment (37 hours per week).
Salary: Salary will be in the range of £26,450 to £29,710 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
