Reporting: Director General for Quebec
Location: Montreal, QC

Description:

Coordinates the implementation of all DSF science-related projects in Quebec. Supports the Director General for Quebec with writing, research and communication of specific policies, (both via the media, and to government and industry contacts), and in developing project proposals, briefings, reports, backgrounders and other materials. Maintains strong relationships with DSF departments and participates in developing networks and alliances with other Quebec ENGOs. Coordinates the science ambassador program.

This position is based in Montreal, Quebec.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Planning & Coordination:

  • Undertake and coordinate science-related projects outlined in the Quebec department work plan.
  • Coordinate the development of funding proposals and related reporting for science-related projects in Quebec.
  • Develop and implement project work plans, and prepare project reports for internal and external use.
  • Supervise and coordinate the publication of reports, and other projects, as required. May include supervision and coordination of contractors in the preparation of reports.
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteer Science Ambassadors.
  • Organize and maintain related files.

2. Policy development:

  • Contribute to the development of Quebec policies through research and analysis.
  • Monitor relevant Quebec policies and other initiatives that relate to DSF-Quebec's core activities.
  • Review policy-related literature to maintain current knowledge of relevant policies.
  • Work with DSF's climate, terrestrial conservation and marine department staff to develop strategic and coordinated efforts to advance their goals in the province.
  • Participate in briefings for decision-makers, media and others and represent DSF in official meetings and committees.

3. Writing, Research & Report Coordination:

  • Monitor and analyze emerging policies and science as well as researching trends in relevant fields.
  • Develop and prepare discussion papers, technical reports, briefing notes, presentations, correspondence, communications, and backgrounders.
  • Copy-edit reports and other external documents in French.

4. Communications:

  • Represent DSF in the Quebec media.
  • Make public presentations on various relevant topics.
  • Write opinion pieces and other written commentaries on relevant issues.

5. Network Building:

  • Meet with representatives from industry and government including policy staff and elected officials to convey DSF policies, and to provide these parties with relevant information.
  • Attend meetings and maintain ongoing contact with other organizations active in relevant fields.
  • Build and maintain networks among ENGOs and other opinion leader groups who support or share DSF's objectives
  • Feed communications loops within DSF with relevant information on events, discussions and meetings.

6. Other related duties, as required.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in environmental science or equivalent.
  • At least five years of previous experience in research and project management.
  • Expertise in and knowledge of current public and business policies on climate and biodiversity issues.
  • Superior strategic planning abilities; results-oriented
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills in French and English. Familiarity with technical writing and ability to interpret technical material for general audiences. Confident and motivating communicator with spokesperson experience.
  • Strong project management skills—can balance reactive daily tasks with planning and stewarding longer-term projects
  • Experience in fundraising for science or sustainability related projects is an asset
  • An active network of professional contacts in science and/or sustainability in Quebec is an asset
  • Able to manage own workload without close supervision and works independently, making decisions and solving problems on routine and complex problems
  • Able to work effectively in a dynamic team environment, in a flexible office environment with periods of high pressure activity
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills. Experience in working effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
