The UCS Science Network is home to thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, public health specialists, and other experts throughout the country who share the desire to put their knowledge to work in protecting our health, safety, and environment. The Science Network enables technical experts to advance the role of science in tackling today’s most complex problems.

The outreach coordinator conceptualizes and implements plans to grow and maintain the Science Network. S/he collaborates across the organization to ensure the Science Network is active in UCS campaigns, and strengthens the mobilization and cultivation of the Science Network members. S/he also works to diversify the ways scientists can engage on issues they care about through UCS, develops trainings and engagement opportunities uniquely tailored early career scientists, and works to ensure a diverse and inclusive Science Network

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that programs fully and effectively utilize Network members to advance their goals.
  • Developing initiatives to cultivate and mobilize scientists nationally, regionally, and in priority states.
  • Identifying and building relationships with Science Network members who serve as leaders and role models within the network.
  • Leading Science Network recruitment and presence at cross-programmatic scientific association conferences
  • Sharing stories of successful engagement within UCS, with other Science Network members, and with other target audiences within the wider scientific community.
  • Creating and implementing innovative approaches to event planning, execution, and follow-up that better recruit and engage members.
  • Training UCS outreach staff on best practices for event planning, relationship cultivation, and engagement, as well as non-outreach program staff regarding how to leverage the Science Network in their work.
  • Cultivating mutually beneficial relationships with expert networks in organizations that serve scientists of color and other underrepresented groups
  • Organizing cross-organizational and program-specific programming tailored for early career scientists (ECS) and scientists of color, such as social events and trainings
  • Developing new avenues for meaningful scientist engagement, including engagement with local communities.
  • Support other efforts of the UCS Center for Science and Democracy.

Qualifications and experience

The ideal candidate will be a strong organizer comfortable working with experts and people from a wide variety of backgrounds.  The position requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field. Demonstrated competency in outreach/organizing on the regional and/or national level and legislative and media strategy is required. The ability to work independently, balance a multitude of tasks, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team is essential. Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact professionally with a diverse array of individuals, including scientists, grassroots activists, and policymakers, are necessary, as are strong skills in internet-related communications, including the presentation of and analyzing information on the web, database software, and word processing.

Work requires three to five years of relevant and comparable experience in an outreach, organizing, campaign, or advocacy position, preferably in a non-profit environment. Applicants should be able to manage multiple projects for extended periods of time, and to be flexible to respond to fast-changing organizational needs, and should be able to demonstrate the ability to conceive, plan, and implement effective outreach campaigns. Experience with program planning and strategy development is a plus, as is the ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields.

Spends extended period at a computer. Little to no exertion. Occasional overnight travel is required. Driver’s license required. Travel equals roughly 10-12% of time.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is in the low $50,000s. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
