Science Leader - Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is theUK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind.    CEH has an annual turnover of £35 million, and employs  staff  across four sites.

CEH is seeking a scientist with an established international reputation to lead the Science Area of Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions across CEH and head a Section at ourEdinburgh site.  CEH is a world leading environmental research organization that undertakes internationally recognized research into air pollution and climate change science. You will have the opportunity to develop a strategic plan for the future of this science and as a member of the CEH Science Planning Team will work with Directors to plan and prioritise science activities within the broader CEH strategic arena.  Your Science Area will span science from CEH’s four sites. You will also be a Section Head managing a cohort of ~40 staff plus students based at ourEdinburgh site. 

Proactive and innovative you will have a track record of high impact work both in science leadership and management. You will have a national and international scientific reputation in your field within the area of Biosphere-Atmosphere interactions and a very strong record of highly cited publications. Your strategic vision and strong leadership abilities will be supported by excellent networking and communication skills.    The ability to motivate people, to maximise the impact of CEH resources and to enhance the performance of your teams is essential.   You will continue to engage in research and other specialist science activities but the majority of your time will be engaged with leadership and management at a senior level, so highly effective time and people management skills are needed.
