Summary: BioDiversity Research Institute (BRI) is searching for a Science Director to join their dynamic team. The mission of BRI is to assess emerging threats to wildlife and ecosystems through collaborative research, and to use scientific findings to advance environmental awareness and inform decision makers. The Science Director will manage the science program, assist in program development/institutional planning, and provide in-house technical expertise to the Executive Director, Program Directors and BRI staff regarding scientific issues. BRI’s Science Program currently includes: Tropical, Raptor, Waterfowl, Songbird, Wetland Bird, Marine Bird, Mammal and Fish. (See website www.briloon.org for program descriptions)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities focus both on short-term and long-term strategic goals for the individual programs in conjunction with the Project Coordinators, Program Directors, and the Management Team.

Science

  • Integrate & coordinate all science programs;
  • Assist Program Directors in developing and achieving goals outlined within individual Science Program Strategic Plans;
  • Ensure that the Science Program is coordinated with all other areas of BRI including Outreach, GIS, Communications, Policy and the Data Team; 
  • Report the activities of the science program regularly to the Executive Director;
  • Develop, secure funding for, and execute new projects in conjunction with program directors and project coordinators;
  • Assist science staff in research design, data analysis, and presentation;
  • Submit original papers to peer-review journals and facilitate Program Directors submitting papers; and
  •  Actively participate in field research when relevant or of interest.

 Management/Administration

  • Provide overall management direction for the science programs and perform supervisory duties for the scientific staff;
  • Manage science Program Directors;
  • Work with the Finance & Accounting Manager and the Deputy Director to manage budgets for each science program;
  • Facilitate and maintain communication between BRI and external science stakeholders;
  • Manage personnel/HR issues (including conflict resolution), involving the HR Manager as appropriate.

Hours/Schedule: This is a full-time position. Science Director will be required to travel as needed, and work some weekends and evenings.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field;
  • More than 10 years of direct experience at a strategic management and scientific level;
  • Mastery of conservation biology and applied science, research design, and statistics in order to serve as the principal advisor for the organization in the area of ecological and environmental research;
  • General knowledge of management, human resource development, contracts, science funding, financial management, technology and development;
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funding;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally in order to represent BRI; and
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing in order to write complex reports, papers, and policies in a clear and concise language on subjects concerning the areas of responsibility.
