Directory Entry : The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) works to provide science-based analysis of and solutions to protect against catastrophic threats to national and international security. Specifically, FAS works to reduce the spread and number of nuclear weapons, prevent nuclear and radiological terrorism, promote high standards for nuclear energy’s safety and security, illuminate government secrecy practices, as well as track and eliminate the global illicit trade of conventional, nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. FAS was founded in 1945 by many of the Manhattan Project scientists who wanted to prevent nuclear war and is one of the longest serving organizations in the world dedicated to reducing nuclear threats and informing the public debate by providing technically-based research and analysis on these issues.

Description

Description:  The FAS International Science Partnership is recruiting participants for its American-Yemeni science partnership project.  This project, which begins in June 2011, will develop an interdisciplinary research project between early-career American and Yemeni scientists and engineers that addresses the critical challenge of developing and implementing affordable, sustainable solutions for providing reliable water and energy services to urban customers in water scarce environments.

Responsibilities:  Participants will participate in a one week visit to Yemen to collaborate with Yemeni colleagues, contribute substantively to the research team’s research and publications, participate in conference calls and virtual meetings with team members over the period of six months to one year, and work with team members and FAS staff to develop a long term research and funding strategy.

How to apply:  Applicants must submit a short (~4 page) proposal identifying a key need within the above identified urban water-energy challenge and outlining how they propose to address this need through a one year, small scale research project. For full proposal and fellowship details, including detailed instructions on how to apply for this fellowship, go to: http://www.fas.org/programs/energy/ISP/ISP%20Request%20for%20Proposals-February%202011.pdf
