Description

Position: Science Coordinator

Length of contract: 1 year

GVI Seychelles is looking for a practical, dependable and responsible individual to oversee the Marine Conservation Expedition Science programme on Mahé. The main focus of GVI Seychelles work is coral reef surveys undertaken on behalf of the Seychelles National Parks Authority. This is a full time position and requires the successful candidate to be based permanently on the expedition base. The successful individual will need to be physically fit, emotionally mature and capable of adapting to changing situations. 

Responsibilities

Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Training international volunteers in species identification and coral reef monitoring techniques
  • Volunteer management
  • Scientific report writing
  • Equipment repair and maintenance
  • Boat driving
  • Providing support to project partners

Qualifications Required

  • MSc/BSc in biological sciences or conservation/two years field experience
  • Familiarity with a number of coral reef monitoring techniques
  • Current PADI Divemaster certification
  • Skipper license
  • Previous experience of volunteering
  • Experience of living in a remote location with minimum supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office & statistical analysis
  • Valid First aid/CPR qualification

Qualifications Desired

  • PADI Instructor certification
  • Emergency First Response Instructor
  • Experience of boat engine maintenance and repair
  • Familiarity with Indian Ocean marine species
  • Experience of turtle tagging
