The science advisor will contribute an international reputation as a large river scientist as part of the Great Rivers Partnership (GRP)—a collaborative effort administered by The Nature Conservancy to advance sustainable management of the world’s great rivers for people and nature. He or she will have experience in promoting the integration of science into public policy and decision-making, and also hold strong convening, networking, and fundraising skills. The position will be a part-time term contract, with length of term negotiable, but likely spanning 1-2 years. The preferred start date would be Fall 2010.

This position may be located at a leading scientific institution, which agrees to participate in the GRP as a major partner. Qualified applicants who are seeking to engage in this effort during a sabbatical, with a defined start and end point, will be considered. Part-time scenario (e.g., 8-15 hours per week) is preferred at this time.

For the first six months, he or she will help design an approach to a science assessment underpinning the collaborative vision and integrated river basin management planning process for the Mississippi River.  As time
allows, the science advisor also will advise on priorities and program development to ensure scientific integrity, and play a key role in communications and networking globally.

The scope and scale of the position encompasses all GRP activities and, as a scientific leader and authority within the GRP organization, he or she advises program leaders on complex aspects of extremely broad strategies and will:

• build a global network of experts that can contribute knowledge and best practices to help inform and solve critical management challenges facing great rivers globally, including but not limited to the Mississippi, Yangtze, Murray-Darling, Danube, Magdalena, and Amazon Rivers;
• lead an ad hoc Science, Economics and Policy Advisory Committee (SEPAC) to help the GRP board and staff develop and implement a program agenda through which GRP can make the greatest impact;
• establish lead partnerships regionally and globally to advance the GRP mission and strategy; and
• ensure impeccable scientific standards.
