POSITION SUMMARY

The Science and Education Assistant is responsible for assisting the Block Island Program: in the recruitment, orientation, and training of volunteers; performing office duties; developing interpretive displays and materials; in the operation of summer nature walks, summer camp programs and other activities; and with biological monitoring and other scientific activities. The Science and Education Assistant is directly supervised by the Director of Land and Freshwater Conservation. This is an 11-week position beginning on/or about June 10, 2013.  There are two paid part-time positions (20 hrs. per week), short-term. Housing is not provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist in the recruitment, orientation, training, management, and guidance of volunteers. (5%)
  • Monitor preserves for appropriate use and do minor trail maintenance. (45%)
  • Perform office duties. (5%)
  • Lead nature walks and tours as assigned to educate the public about local natural history, conservation heritage, and The Nature Conservancy's mission on Block Island. (20%)
  • Lead weekly camp activities focused on learning about Block Island’s natural history. (5%)
  • Assist with biological and legal monitoring and other scientific activities on Nature Conservancy preserves. (10%)
  • Clean and maintain Nature Conservancy facilities. (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned. (5%)
