BackgroundEducating children and changing behaviour about energy/carbon reduction and waste prevention/ recycling is a high priority for Northamptonshire County Council. If we educate children to reduce carbon emissions, waste and energy in schools, then we may be able to change similar behaviour at home and encourage adults as well. This in turn helps the council to meet targets set by local and central government.
ObjectiveThis post will be part of the Energy & Carbon Team but sit within the Waste Minimisation section of the County Waste Management Team. The objectives are to support, coordinate and implement a programme to engage schools across the county to adopt changes in order to reduce energy usage and carbon and waste produced. This will include rolling out and supporting a schools carbon trading game to all schools; encouraging schools to manage their carbon production by reducing energy usage; supporting the work of the waste education team with energy, waste workshops and monitoring and continuing to implement the current schools internal recycling scheme and supporting the 274 schools which are recycling.

Benefits of this opportunityThe work will allow the graduate to gain relevant experience if they are keen to work within the waste and carbon/energy sector, particularly in a local authority. Promoting a change in behaviour in the public and through education in schools, in order to reduce energy/carbon and waste, is a high priority. The graduate will also gain experience in partnership working, reporting and developing literature. On-going training and support will be provided by a team of experienced waste management and energy and carbon officers.
Future employment potential and optionsThere is substantial potential gained from working within a County Council Waste Management Team, and with the Carbon Management Team. Previous graduate placements have gone onto secure permanent positions within this, and other local authorities in England and Scotland, as well as wider sustainability posts in other sectors. Candidates must be a graduate and possess a valid UK driving licence or access to a vehicle insured for business use and driver/assistance.
