ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
|
|
The Marine Technician will be responsible for assisting the Marine Restoration Specialist in site selection, preparing regulatory applications and managing volunteers during the oyster reef install projects in 2014. S/he will spend the majority of his/her time in the field mapping oyster reef community types and plotting potential sites based on criteria presented by TNC staff. The two oyster reefs projects could consist of working with oyster castle blocks, bamboo stakes, bagged shell, etc. One project will take place in spring/summer working with 40 - 60 volunteers from a local company. The oyster reef installations will be part of an on-going pilot effort TNC is conducting to determine the best methodologies for created oyster reefs in South Carolina. The Intern will also be assisting TNC staff with preparing permit exemption documents for the Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Health and Environmental Control, including a standard application and multiple site drawings (including maps created with GIS). The paid position is for approximately 12 months and will average approximately 50 hours a month on the project. TNC

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
|
|
- Bachelor’s degree in biological, environmental or related science field of study.
- Graduate degree student during in the entire 2014 calendar year.
- Experience in working independently, managing project timelines and field work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A working knowledge of GPS equipment and GIS software (ArcGIS 9 or better).
- Preference will go to candidates currently enrolled in a South Carolina College or University.
- A candidate with the ability to operate a truck with boat/trailer and launch it by themselves is highly preferred.
- Completion of a boater safety course highly recommended.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
