Sanitation Project Volunteer Placement

Placement Length:     From December 2011 to June 2012; 7 months
Hours:  Full time
Start Date of placement:  As soon as possible in December 2011.
Closing Date for Applications: Currently 4th December 2011

This position will be run in conjunction with Sanitation Ventures (sanitationventures.com) who have a laboratory at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in the Biology Department. The position is based in a piloting laboratory where worm based sanitation is being evaluated. Further information available at http://www.sanitationventures.com/news.htm

This volunteer role is to aid the day to day running of the piloting laboratory at CAT. This person will be supervised by the lead researcher or research assistant.  The areas that the volunteer will gain experience with includes the following, but it should be noted that this is not an exhaustive list as the activities may develop as the project develops.
•    Assisting in the day to day running of the reactors
•    Monitoring feed levels and reporting on feed collection
•    Feed collection and dispensing
•    Construction of further reactors and general reactor maintenance
•    Day to day running of the stock wormery
•    Assembly, construction and maintenance of on-site mock ups
•    Sample collection from on-site mock ups
•    Depending on experience and aptitude aiding the monitoring of the reactors and on-site mock ups and reporting on these activities
•    Possibility to undertake an independent project related to the main project

Relevant knowledge, skills and experience
•    A foundation in basic science/engineering  (A ‘level or equivalent )
•    Desirable a degree in a relevant subject  
•    Laboratory and practical maintenance experience (i.e DIY)
•    Good computer skills
•    Ability to problem solve and make decisions independently
•    Excellent organisational and time management skills
•    Willingness to assume responsibility
•    An interest in and enthusiasm  for  sanitation, development and worms  
•    Excellent interpersonal skills

Expenses:
Up to £100 per week bursary will be available to aid with accommodation, food and travel on receipt of receipts.  Lunch plus tea & coffee will be provided during your working days.  Monies will be taken out of the bursary for the lunch /tea /coffee.
In addition, volunteers are entitled to attend two courses at CAT (to be agreed on with supervisor & subject to availability).
