For the past 12 years (2000 to 2011) the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has been involved in an international seed conservation programme called the Millennium Seed Bank (MSB) Partnership. This programme was initiated and is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG, Kew), and SANBI is managing the South African partnership with RBG, Kew. In 2010, a new interim agreement was signed which extends the partnership to 2015 (and eventually to 2020). The Project functions and is managed within the SANBI Gardens Conservation Programme (GCP).

 SANBI needs the services of an enthusiastic, capable and competent person to manage the MSB Project activities in South Africa as well as coordinate the GCP across South Africa’s national botanical gardens. A keen interest in, and passion for, the conservation of South Africa’s indigenous plants with a particular interest in ex situ conservation is a pre-requisite.

 The prospective applicant is required to have an advanced understanding of the nature and purpose ofex situ conservation at SANBI, be in possession of a BSc Hons or BTech in Botany, Conservation or Environmental Management, enhanced by 5-10 years active and relevant post-qualification experience in the conservation of South African indigenous plants.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INVOLVE:

  • Coordinate and provide strategic direction for the Gardens Conservation Programme across South Africa’s national botanical gardens.
  • Liaison with the partners and funders.
  • Planning, coordination and setting goals for the MSB Project in South Africa.
  • Strategic expansion of MSB Project activities.
  • Identifying and developing research opportunities in support of conservation activities at the national botanical gardens.
  • Developing and maintaining a network of partners and stakeholders including conservation organizations and universities.

 The candidate is required to demonstrate good leadership, communication, strategic and analytical skills, and excellent interpersonal relations. The candidate must be highly proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel and possess a valid Code B driver’s license plus extensive driving experience in rural areas and be willing and able to travel nationally extensively.

 SANBI offers a salary of R275 910 per annum and additional fringe benefits, which include attractive medical and pension schemes.
