Description

It is anticipated that the successful intern will be based out of The Crown Estate’s St James’s Market office, with travel across Kent required at times. Induction, training and work will be a mixture of online, and in the office or field.

Salary: £21,547.50 per annum (pro rata based on the London Living Wage)

Duration: Full-time (35 hrs per week) fixed-term for 6 months from 6 June – 2 December 2022.

The opportunity: The Coast Explorer Internship Programme offers a unique opportunity to the candidate who is passionate and enthusiastic about the marine environment. The Coast Explorer Intern will gain skills, knowledge and experience across a variety of sectors in this exciting field to help direct and shape their future career ambitions.

This internship programme is funded by The Crown Estate and project managed by Kent Wildlife Trust Consultancy Services. The programme is run in partnership with The Crown Estate, Kent Wildlife Trust Consultancy Services, Vattenfall and Canterbury City Council. Each partner organisation provides opportunities for the intern to develop skills in specialist areas including, marine conservation, climate change, renewable energy, social sustainability, seabed leasing and marine planning.

The successful intern will follow a varied programme that will allow them to gain a range of essential skills including: team work, creativity, leadership, listening, communication (written and verbal), aiming high, problem solving, and staying positive. These skills will be developed through a variety of work-based experience and training – from undertaking research projects and communicating research outcomes, to learning about renewable energy development and environmental issues, and from undertaking scientific surveys and using GIS, to understanding environmental casework and delivering marine awareness activities. The successful intern will work with a variety of teams across different sectors and develop key contacts and networks that will help with their career development.

In 2022, the focus will be on marine environmental and social sustainability. The successful intern will work closely with The Crown Estate and Canterbury City Council to lead on engagement with schools in the Kent area, to gather insights and to develop educational materials that support skills development and raise awareness of the marine sector.

Many past interns from the Coast Explorer Internship Programme have successfully secured employment in the marine sector! From Marine Conservation Officers, Marine Consultants, Coastal Surveyors, GIS Officers and Environmental Instructors.

What we are looking for: An intern who can build on their existing skills and knowledge to make the most of this unique experience. Applicants should have a good understanding of current marine issues and some experience of working or volunteering within the marine sector. Most importantly, we are looking for candidates who are passionate and enthusiastic about a career in the marine sector and have a willingness to learn. Due to hybrid working restrictions (i.e. home-based and office working), we are looking for someone who is organised, self-motivated, and able to work well within remote teams. A full driving licence and access to a car with business use insurance is desirable due to the nature of travelling around Kent.

Closing date for applications: Midnight Friday 8th April 2022. Please apply via the Kent Wildlife Trust page under the Coast Explorer Internship job listing. There will be an applicant information form, which you must fill in as well as submitting:

CV and covering letter, outlining your interest in the internship, relevant skills and experience. It must also address the following questions:

1. What do you hope to gain from taking part in this internship?

2. How do your experience, knowledge and skills make you a suitable candidate for this internship?

3. Why do you think it is important to consider multiple users and uses of marine and coastal environments?

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Interviews: Week commencing 2nd May 2022. Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed by The Crown Estate. If you feel that you would require overnight accommodation in order to be able to attend an interview, please contact us after being invited to interview to discuss prior to booking.
