The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. 

We are now looking for a Marine Biologist to work within the Ecosystems programme, this project will study the auto ecology of soft sediment animal communities in the Antarctic. The position involves extensive SCUBA diving to study community structure and quantify the ecological parameters: density, patchiness, growth and age at reproduction. This requires extensive use of light microscopy and laboratory techniques to identify species and gather the ecological information that will feed into ecosystem models of shallow water communities. The post involves a minimum of 1.5 years at the British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research Station, Antarctica and should result in a number of high quality scientific publications. The post holder will be expected to play a role in planning, organisation, and implementation of this research programme but the post also requires supporting a diverse range of marine science projects, and base activities, at Rothera Research Station, particularly during the summer months.

Qualifications: BSc 2:2, minimum

Experienced diver (minimum 100 logged dives (50 cold water and dry suit dives). Capable of passing HSE commercial diving course before deployment to Antarctica

Benthic community identification, microscope and laboratory skills

HSE SCUBA (part IV) or Advanced European Scientific Diver or sport equivalent (BSAC adv, PADI divemaster) - is highly desirable for this post, although not essential

Duration: 19 months

Salary: Salary will be from £21,037 per annum.
