JOB SUMMARY: The Coordinator focuses on implementing the goals and objectives of the River Protection Program as they relate to the Rogue River watershed in Oregon. Healthy rivers provide sourcewaters, drinking water, flood protection, fish and wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities, and economic benefits to local communities. The Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of strategies to build support among communities in Southwest Oregon for river protection policies and practices in the Rogue River Basin. The successful candidate will work with other American Rivers staff to advocate for permanent protection of the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. The successful candidate will cultivate new relationships with locally trusted opinion-shapers and build support from local organizations, businesses, and constituencies in Southern Oregon for the Save the Wild Rogue Campaign. This offer is for a one year term and is a full-time position with the possibility of extension depending on need.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the NW Rogue River staff, the Senior Director of River Protection and key partners to develop and advocate for innovative river protection strategies in the Rogue River basin including federal Wilderness and Wild and Scenic River designations.
  • Build relationships with and educate strategic partners, local and county decisionmakers, and stakeholders in Southern Oregon about the benefits of increased protections for the lower Rogue River.
  • Cultivate support for the Save the Wild Rogue Campaign from businesses, stakeholder organizations, schools, senior, health, and veteran groups, other civic groups, municipal and county decisionmakers, and southern Oregon tribes.
  • Represent the interests of American Rivers and its partners in public meetings, before relevant municipal decisionmakers, local businesses, and state and federal agencies.
  • Establish and maintain regular lines of communication between local stakeholders and the Save the Wild Rogue Coalition.
  • Represent American Rivers at meetings, press events and other public events.
  • Maintain excellent relations with other American Rivers staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong relationships in Southern Oregon, preferably the Rogue River Basin, with business community, elected officials and federal and state agencies.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in conservation and/or public policy with strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and astute political judgment essential.
  • Strategic thinker; highly organized and able to meet deadlines.
  • Team player and demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues to advance an organization’s broader goals.
  • High energy level, self-motivated individual able to work independently.
  • At least 5 years of experience working in the area of natural resource policy or management at a state, regional, or federal level preferred.
  • Experience in public lands policy, water policy and programs, federal policy, and knowledge of federal and state natural resource laws and policy preferred.
