This professional-level position is responsible for development and effective implementation of regional wildlife and habitat conservation strategies in the Rocky Mountain Region, and working with other staff in implementing the overall mission and goals of Defenders. This Representative will prioritize the conservation of a variety of imperiled and keystone species and the effective implementation of State Wildlife Action Plans, that furthers the mission, vision and goals of Defenders’ strategic plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Effectively advocate Defenders’ interests in Defenders’ Rocky Mountain Region.
  • Advance the conservation and recovery of prioritized species throughout Defenders’ Rocky Mountain Region using a variety of strategies including but not limited to:
    • State Wildlife Action Plans and their effective implementation;
    • Advocacy in administrative, scientific, legislative, policy, and judicial forums;
    • Pursuing policy and programmatic changes in state and federal agencies;
    • Analyzing and commenting on wildlife management policies and proposals;
    • Recommending litigation where appropriate and providing technical support;
    • Public media representation and outreach;
    • Direct and grassroots advocacy and lobbying in state and federal legislatures and administrations.
  • Cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with wildlife and resource managers, decisionmakers, and stakeholders, including state and federal wildlife managers, elected and appointed officials, scientists, landowners, and conservation organizations.
  • Represent Defenders in relevant working groups, committees, and public forums.
  • Assist with public and member education on organization priorities through news media, public appearances, dissemination of educational materials and Defenders’ communication tools.
  • Review relevant documents, publications, alerts, and fundraising appeals for accuracy.
  • Maintain a complete and organized collection of information relevant to regional issues.
  • Maintain timely and complete accounting of activities and expenses.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Advanced scientific degree in Wildlife or Resource Management, Conservation Biology, or related field.
  • Experience:
    • At least 5 years experience in wildlife or resource conservation, management, or science.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Other:
    • Understanding of wildlife biology and related fields.
    • Familiarity with laws, policies, politics, and stakeholders affecting wildlife.
    • Excellent communication skills--both written and oral.
    • Ability to work independently to initiate and implement project ideas.
    • Ability to work constructively as a member of a team.
    • Personal interest and commitment to conservation.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Physical Demands:
    • The employee will be required to travel, including to some locations that may be difficult to access such as rural or remote locations.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate with others.
  • Work Environment:
    • General office and field working conditions, the noise level in the office environment is usually quiet.
  • Comments:
    • This position requires regular domestic travel.
