Rivers & Coastal Design Team Leader

To strengthen our rivers and coastal engineering team in Peterborough we want to appoint a Principal/Civil Structural Design Engineer to act as the Design Team Leader. The successful candidate will lead the technical delivery of a range of flood risk management schemes, ranging from pre-feasibility through to detailed design and construction support. He or she will be a key member of the team and will bring a flair for design work with the people skills to mentor engineers and technicians alike. The post offers the opportunity to apply and develop specialist skills across a variety of schemes which range from minor refurbishment schemes through to major capital projects. Typically these will range from embankment design, retaining walls, outfalls, floodwalls, locks and weir structures through to the design of coastal structures, barriers, barrages and gates. Our key clients include the Environment Agency, local authorities and Internal Drainage Boards, private developers and our own internal market.  It is our aspiration to create a centre of technical excellence in the delivery of these works that is recognised internally and externally as a market-leader.

Candidates will already possess significant civil and structural design experience within the flood risk management and/or water industries. Core skills will include earth embankment, steel sheet pile and concrete/composite floodwall design and specification. Experience in the design of coastal works would be desirable but is not a core requirement.  The candidate must bring a real enthusiasm for technical delivery, flair for seeking new solutions and optimising existing assets and for engendering this enthusiasm within the engineers and technicians that he or she will be leading. The successful applicant will be a chartered civil and/or structural engineer with the appropriate experience to satisfy the above criteria. He/she will have up to date knowledge of the principal eurocodes, excellent team-working and client-facing skills and a flexible can-do attitude.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical expertise across the rivers and coastal team on design and specification issues. He or she will be a focal point for assistant engineers, graduates and technicians to whom he or she will provide technical guidance. The candidate will report directly to project managers for the various schemes but will enjoy autonomy in the way the technical deliverables are produced. This will entail workload allocation, checking and recommendation to the Regional Business Manager of suitable training and development opportunities. This is a technical role which will give the successful candidate the opportunity to get involved in the “nuts and bolts” of design issues. It will appeal to those who enjoy the technical aspects of civil engineering and who can think differently to bring real value to our clients.
