American Rivers is the leading national organization standing up for healthy rivers so communities can thrive. American Rivers protects and restores America’s rivers for the benefit of people, wildlife and nature. Founded in 1973, American Rivers has more than 65,000 members and supporters nationwide. American Rivers’ River Restoration Program is staffed by engineers, scientists, and planners with cumulatively decades of experience completing dam removal projects.

Our Northeast Region staff is currently involved with 45 dam removal projects, and works with partners throughout the region to build capacity and develop new projects.
The River Restoration Program Fellow will provide support for dam removal and other river restoration efforts in the Northeast Region. This paid Fellowship will be a rewarding opportunity to learn how dam removal projects are initiated, completed, and monitored and how they benefit river ecosystems.

Tasks will include:

  • Gathering and compiling information on the ecological benefits and impacts of dam removal projects
  • Developing a reporting format and assembling briefs on dam removal monitoring results
  • Compiling general information and updates on dam removals in the Northeast Region
  • Providing assistance as needed and as time allows for on-the-ground dam removal projects and other programmatic activities

Applicants should:

  • Have completed course work and a strong interest in environmental management in a field such as ecology, engineering, fluvial geomorphology, landscape architecture, planning, or communications
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Be persistent in tracking down information and data by email, phone, and internet
  • Be able to complete simple operations with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets

The Fellowship will be based in Northampton, Mass., and the Fellow will report to Brian Graber, Director, River Restoration Program.  The Fellowship will be approximately 10 hours per week through June 30, 2010 with a potential to extend through summer 2010.  Pay will be $8/hour.

To apply, applicants should submit a cover letter, Fellowship application, resume, three references and a brief writing sample to: Fanette Jones, Director of Administration, American Rivers, 1101 14th Street, NW, Suite 1400, Washington, DC 20005; or fjones@amrivers.org, Subject: “Massachusetts Fellow.” No phone calls, please
