8 month internship positions available - Riparian Ecology and Restoration along the beautiful Truckee River, Nevada.  Ideal for students of Environmental science/Ecology or related fields.Project Details

Dates:  28th March to 2nd December 2011 - 16 places available

Students will work with two researchers on implementing an adaptive management and riparian restoration project along the beautiful Truckee River.  In partnering with the University of Nevada, this project is located on the Universities Agricultural Experiment Station, just outside of Reno, Nevada. 

The project will involve:

  • the removal of the invasive exotic lapidium latifolium, and
  • the restoration of this degraded site to a system of increased ecological structure and function. This will involve the installation of in-stream bioengineering structures, the use of soil restoration techniques and revegitation, including; pole plantings, reseeding, and the installation of potted perennials.
  • Interns will also assist with data collection and analysis for long term and short term monitoring.
  • Will learn and apply long term and short term range land and riparian monitoring techniques.
  • Will learn and apply soil restoration techniques and best management practices.

The begin date represents the desired arrival date of the volunteer. The end date represents the return date from the volunteers' last field project.  Please try to arrive on the beginning date and arrange departure travel within 48 hours of the stated end date.

 

Internship Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a foreign degree or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States, or;
  • Have graduated from such an institute no more than 12 months prior to the programme start date (as from March 2010);
  • Are studying or have studied a subject in the domain of Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology or a related field;
  • Speak English to a good level;
  • Are over 18 years old; and,
  • Possess a valid passport throughout any time spent in the United States
  • You need to be fit and healthy and capable of carrying out manual work in strenous conditions and able to hike to and from project sites.
  • Need to have an interest in conservation, restoration and wilderness.



Programme cost:
There is a one off application cost of £180 to take part in this internship programme.  To join, interns will need to apply and also undergo a telephone interview.  If you are accepted, your £180 will be taken - if we cannot offer you a place, it will be refunded.  There is also a $300, non-refundable, visa processing fee (see under Visas) and a refundable $150 security deposit (see under Lodging & Food) for lodging and field gear (refunded at end of programme).

Compensation:
Interns will receive a living stipend of $7473.00 for the eight month programme.  This is not an hourly wage or salary and is paid to interns bi-monthly throughout the programme.  Interns are also provided with lodging facilities.

Visas
ICVE Internships and the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP):  The U.S. Department of State has designated the International Conservation Volunteer Exchange to administer a J-1 Student Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVP).  All ICVE interns are sponsored through this J-1 visa programme and must meet the above minimum internship requirements to be eligible for placement.

When offered a placement, each participant is responsible for a $300, non-refundable, visa processing fee.  The visa process can take up to 3 months to complete and will be done for you if you fit the above requirements.  In addition, there may be some other costs related to final obtension of the visa, but the maximum you should expect to pay in total will be $500 (includes the $300).  This fee is due upon acceptance to the programme.

Lodging & Food
While in the field, you will camp in either primitive wilderness areas or in developed campgrounds near their project sites (tents will be provided by ICVE). On days off, you are provided with lodging – free of charge.  The lodging facilities are located in and around Reno, Nevada. Whether across the street from the University of Nevada and in walking distance to downtown Reno, or 8,000 feet (about 2,500 m) above sea level on Mount Rose, ICVE housing facilities offer limitless opportunities for exploration and recreation.

The provided lodging is similar to a dormitory as it contains multiple bunk beds per room, shared living areas, a kitchen and bathroom facilities. The lodging environment creates a great atmosphere in which participants are immersed with cultures from all over the world; at any given time, interns may be housed with people from up to a dozen other nations. Interns will have the opportunity to foster life-long friendships with people from around the world during their time on these projects.

A refundable $150 (for lodging facilities and field gear) security deposit is also required from each participant - this will be returned to you at the end of the programme upon inspection of any gear issued and lodging facilities.  This is due upon acceptance to the programme.
