Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. | | POSITION SUMMARY | | The Nature Conservancy in Alaska seeks a temporary Restoration Technician for its Mat-Su Basin Salmon Conservation Program. The Restoration Technician will be an integral part of fish passage restoration projects on tributaries of the Little Susitna River. In particular, this position will provide on-site construction oversight of culverts to be removed or replaced, monitor success of fish passage and stream restoration projects, assist with revegetation of restoration sites, and survey and assess potential restoration sites. Additional activities may include stream mapping with GPS, documenting anadromous streams, and assisting with environmental education about salmon and restoration. | | ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS | | The Restoration Technician participates in fish passage restoration and salmon conservation projects in the Mat-Su Basin. This may include one or more of the following functions: • Maps anadromous streams • Surveys barriers to fish passage, including culverts, and assesses their impediment to fish • Observes construction of culvert replacements and stream restoration • Revegetates restoration sites • Monitors progress at restoration sites | | BASIC QUALIFICATIONS | | • High school diploma and 1 year’s experience, coursework or other training in hydrology, biology, restoration, civil or environmental engineering, geomorphology or other field related to fish passage restoration. • Experience or training in field work or construction. | | ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION | | REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS • Experience working with or knowledge of stream restoration • Experience with GPS units and GIS mapping preferred • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather • Valid driver’s license • Ability to convey work instructions to other team members, including volunteers
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT The Restoration Technician may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain in bear country, and under physically demanding circumstances. All remote work will be performed with a partner.
