In cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting a Restoration Crew Leader and Biological Technician with a two-part position.  In the spring and fall working as part of a larger team leading a four member NCC (Nevada Conservation Corps) crew implementing restoration on illegal off-highway vehicle routes across the SMNRA.  In the summer months, working as part of a two person biology crew with the restoration coordinator to monitor previously implemented restoration projects, identifying and collecting native plant seeds, repeat photo monitoring, fence monitoring and repairs.  This person will be responsible for leading restoration crews, data collection, entry and analysis, report writing and other tasks assigned by SMNRA resource biologists.  An opportunity to participate in skill training (e.g. GIS, CPR/first aid, and leadership) is available.

 

Compensation:  

  • $14.00 per hour
  • Daily Field per diem
  • Medical and dental benefits

  • Optional housing provided in USFS Spring Mountains National Recreation Area bunkhouse in Mt. Charleston, NV

 

Timeline: 

  • March 15 – December 15, 2014. Start and end dates somewhat flexible (9 months total duration)
  • Full time, 40 hours per week.  Typically working four consecutive ten hour days.  Some weekends may be included and the schedule is subject to change on short notice.

 

Location:

  • Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (25 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV)

 

Qualifications:

 

Desired Skills:

  • Leadership ability to guide up to four NCC crew members through daily restoration activities
  • Experience with habitat restoration using a variety of hand tools (e.g. shovels, pick mattock);
  • Experience conducting field surveys with the ability to follow protocols
  • Ability to identify plants using a dichotomous key without pictures (ability to identify grass species is desired);
  • Experience collecting seeds with a seed collection protocol, desirable;
  • Experience using different monitoring protocols (e.g. repeat photography, transect and quadrat systematic sampling);
  • Experience working with hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and data collection;
  • Knowledge of GIS software (highly desirable but not required);
  • Experience with technical writing and/or producing written project/grant reports.

 

Additional qualifications:

  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time (e.g., digging, bending over, hauling material, hiking);
  • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition;
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including consecutive 12 hour days, and camping for the duration of the work week.
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, agency staff, and the public;
  • Good organizational skills;
  • Valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;
  • Experience operating 4WD trucks on paved and unpaved roads, including narrow, mountain forest roads.
