The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of conservation volunteers, is seeking an experienced, quality oriented outdoor leader to supervise a team of five interns responsible for completing a variety of work projects in California’s Eastern Sierra region.  Work projects may include, but are not limited to: OHV-related restoration, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, fence construction/maintenance, and riparian restoration.  Work projects will require proficiency with a variety of hand tools and will be conducted in an outdoor setting with highly variable weather conditions.  The project leader will be responsible for agency relations and work logistics with 4 different agencies; US Park Service, US Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and Friends of the Inyo.

The crew camps primitively while in the field for up to 10 days at a time, and will be field based on days off as well.  Showers will be made available during days off.  Program duration is 3 months.

Primary Responsibilities:

Crew Manager

  • Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
  • Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, vehicles, and housing arrangements
  • Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment

Technical Advisor

  • Supervise the work skills training of corps members
  • Manage the quality & technique of work performed
  • Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential

Partnership Representative

  • Manage relationship with agency partner
  • Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
  • Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator

  • Communicate with SCA field support staff as required
  • Complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
  • Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • 1-3 years prior experience supervising young adults in an outdoor wilderness setting
  • 1-2 years previous restoration and/or conservation skills experience
  • Current Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification
  • Possess High School diploma, Bachelors degree preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment exposed to the elements for extended periods of time

Program Dates: Position begins April 10th with Project Leader Orientation with SCA in Boise, ID.  Corps members arrive May 23rd 2011.  Members depart on August 24th, Project Leaders need to plan for time after members depart to finish reporting requirements.

Compensation: Salary range $500-$545 per week, paid biweekly.  No insurance offered.
