Description

The Nature Conservancy is the world’s leading conservation organization, working in all 50 states and more than 33 countries. Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This position is to coordinate the project “Attacking deforestation through the responsible sourcing of agricultural commodities in the states of Mato Grosso and Pará”, financed by the Environment Program of USAID’s mission in Brasília. The project is being implemented by a consortium led by The Nature Conservancy-Brazil and also including the Instituto Socioambiental – ISA and Instituto Centro da Vida – ICV. It will work with sectors of the agribusiness industry in Brazil, especially beef and soy, to minimize environmental impacts in strategic conservation geographies in Pará and Mato Grosso states. The Project Coordinator is the person responsible for the implementation of TNC’s actions in the workplan and the management of the project budget. He/she is also responsible for the efficient coordination and implementation of the project, working together with the other members of the consortium to create internal and external synergies, ensure efficient cross-cutting support and guaranteeing an atmosphere of collaboration and consensus within the consortium. The Coordinator will represent the consortium to USAID, guaranteeing the timely delivery of high quality technical and financial reports within set deadlines, and is the lead person responsible for managing the relationship between USAID and the project. The precise technical training of the person  has less weight than practical experience in the coordination of complex projects involving multiple actors. This experience could come from a variety of backgrounds: NGOs, public and/or private sector, or a combination of the same. Political skills –in every sense - are essential for coordination of this project to be successful.

The project has a duration of three years, from October 1st 2009. There is a strong possibility of extension beyond that limit. The annual project budget will be approximately US$2 mn, including match contributions.

The Coordinator will be an employee of TNC Brazil. The person will be based in a TNC office, in either Brasília, Belém or Cuiabá. There is no possibility of this position being based anywhere other than these locations.
