Are you passionate about nature conservation? Do you have excellent habitat and species knowledge, particularly for wetland birds? Are you able to help shape and manage nearly 100ha of wetlands, grasslands and woodlands? Can you engage the public in the restoration and management of this important nature reserve in south London?

If so, we are looking for you!

Beddington Farmlands Nature Reserve is a landfill site undergoing extensive habitat creation and restoration.

This is a once in a lifetime role to drive forwards habitat restoration and management work with site staff, contractors and local stakeholders, including volunteers, to deliver the largest area for nature conservation in south London, emulating the highly successful RSPB Rainham Marshes near Dartford and the London Wetland Centre at Barnes.

Your work will focus on this site, providing specialist knowledge and advice on achieving the goals of the site for the target species (mainly wetland birds), creating and monitoring habitat management plans, undertaking practical habitat management, undertaking species and habitat surveys & monitoring and creating interpretation for the site.

You will help will welcome visitors to parts of the site for bird and nature watching, informally and through guided walks and talks, as well as building volunteering opportunities.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • be a driven and passionate conservationist / ecologist
  • have at least 3 years’ practical experience of habitat creation and management (wetlands, including wet grassland management and monitoring, would be especially useful)
  • have good identification and surveying skills (ornithology and botany are particularly important)
  • have proven experience of building and managing volunteer teams
  • have excellent communication skills for dealing with a wide range of people, from the public to experienced birders and stakeholders, enthusing them about nature and the site
  • have the ability to work in partnership with different organisations
  • be highly motivated, independent and organised to work efficiently
