This is an exceptional opportunity to make a very real contribution to the protection of Australia’s unique wildlife and their habitat. Bush Heritage Australia is an independent, leading conservation not-for-profit, and is currently seeking a Reserve Manager – Fish River.

We are a growing organisation that works on a vast scale and are always striving to increase our conservation impact in line with our long-term strategies. Our vision of Healthy Country, Protected Forever sees us work where we are needed most: in areas of high conservation value with low levels of protection. With the help of our donors, we buy and manage land, so we can protect our irreplaceable landscapes and our magnificent native species forever.

Currently we own 37 reserves, and we protect and help manage 11.3 million hectares of land across the country. In our mission to return the bush to good health, we provide habitat for 6,746 native species, including at least 228 threatened species.  Two proven approaches underline what we do: we carefully select, purchase and manage landscapes of high conservation value; and we work in partnership with Traditional Owners and others to achieve key conservation outcomes.

About the role

The Reserve Manager will work with local Indigenous people to build capacity and manage Fish River for the use and enjoyment of local Indigenous people - providing social, cultural and economic benefits while protecting cultural heritage and biodiversity.

This will require engaging with the local Indigenous community and working with the Indigenous Management Committee to implement a divestment strategy for the property. You will recruit, train, mentor and lead the Indigenous ranger team to build their capacity to implement annual cultural and natural resource management activities in accordance with the Fish River Plan of Management.

What you will need to succeed

  • Commitment and passion for nature conservation and the objectives and values of Bush Heritage.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or demonstrated experience in land management, with specific experience in Natural Resource Management (NRM).
  • Experience and the ability to live and work in remote, isolated areas with excellent practical and problem-solving skills that enable self-sufficiency living on reserve including knowledge of risk assessment procedures.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in working with Indigenous peoples, and especially within the conservation and land management sectors.

How to apply

If you have a passion for conservation and want to make a real difference in protecting our natural environment, then apply by sending your resume and a cover letter (two pages maximum) clearly addressing the selection criteria (Points 1 to 5 only) outlined in the position description to employment@bushheritage.org.au, quoting your name and job ID (RMFR2021) in the subject line.
