Natural Resource Management Group
Recruitment for Regular Researcher Position
The IGES Natural Resources Management (NRM) Group conducts strategic policy research, capacity building activities and outreach to contribute to the management, protection and enhancement of natural resources in the Asia-Pacific region. As part of the NRM Group, the Forest Conservation Team aims to contribute to the development of policy instruments for the sustainable management of forests in the Asia-Pacific region. Working closely with partners in the Asia-Pacific region, the Forest Conservation Team is engaged in research from local to international levels that includes a strong community-focused fieldwork component in developing countries. Its areas of research are 1. Forests and climate change, and 2. Instruments to guide, verify and reward the production of and trade in legal and sustainable wood products.


1. Recruited Position: One Regular Researcher on Forest Conservation 
(Or One Associate Researcher)

- Main focus: Forests and climate link in developing countries
- Main activity: Conduct strategic policy research and develop policy recommendations

2. Qualifications
- Doctoral Degree in a field relevant to forest policy (e.g. forest policy science, political science, geography, economics, etc.)
- Research experience in developing countries
- Knowledge of major forest policy issues in developing topical countries
- Desire to link policy research with practice.
- Experience working on funded research projects
- A strong track record of high quality publications
- Experience working in multicultural work environments
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in both Japanese and English
- Demonstrated willingness to take initiative and to work with limited supervision
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a research team, and to engage with a broad range of stakeholders - government, academia, industry, NGOs - across countries
- Understanding of REDD+ concepts and principle
- Demonstrated success in organizing workshops/seminars
- More than 5 years work experience in research institutes, universities, think-tanks, governmental agencies, private companies or international organisations would be a valuable asset


3. Employment Contract

Regular Researcher: May 2011 to 31 March 2013 with a probationary period and possible contract renewal
Associate Researcher: May 2011 to 31 March 2012 with a probationary period and possible contract renewal

Annual vacation (paid leave) comprises twenty days per fiscal year, and summer holidays (5 days)
Salary
Annual salary system
Salary is determined by IGES regulations, taking into consideration the employee's research career, achievements, occupational history, expertise and experience.
Allowances
Allowances(commuting, housing, retirement) will be provided and travel expenses for relocation/return trips will be covered in accordance with the internal rule of IGES.
Insurance
Insurance (health, employee pension, unemployment and workers' accident compensation) will be partly covered by IGES.

Annual vacation (paid leave) will be granted in accordance with the Labor Standard Law of Japan (10 days after six months have passed) in addition to summer holidays (three days)

Salary is determined by IGES regulations, taking into consideration the employee's research career, achievements, occupational history, expertise and experience.
Allowances

will be provided and travel expenses for relocation/return trips will be covered in accordance with the internal rule of IGES.
