Description

Fixed term appointment (until 30 June 2022), based in Edinburgh.

Starting salary: £29,759 (Pay Award Pending)

Applications are invited for the above vacancy within the Centre for Middle Eastern Plants (CMEP), part of The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).

RBGE is one of the world's leading research orientated Botanic Gardens (www.rbge.org.uk), and is located in a UNESCO World Heritage city famed for its scientific innovation and cultural interest. CMEP uniquely specializes in the conservation of plants and habitats across the Middle East, working with partners to address contemporary environmental challenges based upon under-pinning knowledge about the region in which we work (www.cmep.org.uk).

This is a fixed term appointment until 30 June 2022 with start date on 1 September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. It is a multi-disciplinary role, and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake research and contribute to a range of projects including:

  • Sustainable plant use in Tajikistan;
  • CMEP taxonomy, conservation and sustainable use programmes;
  • CMEP consultancy projects across the Middle East.

This position is part-funded through the Darwin Initiative funded project “Know your onions: sustainable plant use in Tajikistan” directed by the Centre for Middle Eastern Plants, with project partners in both the UK and Tajikistan. The project has several themes: these include bringing a number of species currently harvested unsustainably into local cultivation, field monitoring of selected plant species to assess associated reductions in plant and habitat loss, capacity development and awareness raising activities about sustainable use, and a National Report on Native Plants for Livelihoods co-constructed with national, regional and global partners, including extensive research into plant use, benefits, and the potential for local cultivation to improve livelihoods and reduce species and habitat loss.

In addition to this project, CMEP has an ongoing and developing portfolio of strategic programmes across the Middle East that require research, support and implementation, with fieldwork sometimes required at relatively short notice. The successful applicant will support these programmes according to the specific skills they bring to the position.

Applicants should hold an MSc or PhD in plant science, conservation or related discipline, or in international development with a strong interest in sustainable use of natural resources and plant or habitat conservation. You should have a dynamic and collaborative approach to research, and excellent time management skills and attention to detail.

A full job description and person specification which outlines the main duties in more detail, and the essential and desirable criteria for this post, can be downloaded from this page. Informal enquires can be made to Dr Alan Forrest (AForrest@rbge.org.uk).

Applications should be made by CV and covering letter, outlining skills and experience relevant to the post, which should be sent along with a completed equal opportunities form to recruitment@rbge.org.uk no later than 17.00 GMT on Friday 9th August 2019. Interviews will be held in late August 2019.

If you have not heard from us by 31 August 2019, please assume that your application has not been shortlisted. No recruitment agencies please.
