Description

E3G is looking for a researcher to join our growing Berlin office to strengthen our advocacy, research and analysis work in Germany and Europe. This role will support the development of E3G’s work in the Berlin office with a particular focus on Coal Phase-Out and Just Transition in Germany and Eastern Europe, with the overarching objective to contribute to the successful implementation of the Paris Agreement.

E3G is an independent climate change think tank operating to accelerate the global transition to a low-carbon economy. Since its foundation in 2004, E3G has been committed to help strengthen Europe’s pioneering role in promoting a low-carbon transition. To achieve our objectives, we produce political analysis, engage in domestic and international politics, design strategies and build effective coalitions. E3G was ranked 5th most influential Environmental Policy Think Tank in the prestigious Global Go To Think Tank Index Report.

We are looking to expand the research support for our Berlin office. The appointee will engage in extensive country research, testing and analysis to better understand countries’ core political economy dynamics and their alignment with the clean, resilient transition. Using this knowledge, the appointee will support political scenario and strategy development processes across E3G and with our partners, particularly on issues related to Fossil Phase-out, Just Transition and European Climate Diplomacy. Further tasks include support for communications and outreach for the Berlin office, monitoring of key European and international moments as well as coordination and meeting administration.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, testing and analysis to better understand countries’ political economy dynamics and their alignment with the clean, resilient transition.
  • Produce high-quality analysis and reports, mainly on coal phase-out policies in Europe, a Just Transition from a high-carbon to a low-carbon economy, and opportunities for a low-carbon transition in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Conduct discreet pieces of research to inform European Climate Diplomacy briefing materials, scenarios and strategies.
  • Proactively track relevant policy developments and key European and international climate diplomacy moments and events.
  • Support E3G Berlin’s communications efforts including producing communications materials, website administration, social media engagement and internal communications.
  • Support stakeholder convenings as well as organizational coordination and meeting administration.

Experience and skills

  • You have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and a relevant post-graduate degree (desirable);
  • You ideally have 2-5 years work experience;
  • You have strong quantitative and qualitative research skills and some experience working with real and political economy datasets;
  • You have a track record of achievements in an energy, environment or climate-related field, experience of working on coal and Just Transition would be an advantage;
  • You demonstrate strategic and political understanding of the challenges of the low-carbon transition in Europe and Germany. You prioritise achieving outcomes over running activities;
  • You are fluent in English and German (C2-level) and have excellent writing skills in both;
  • You are a strong team player, demonstrating a high level of initiative and strong organization and communication skills. You pay attention to detail, work effectively and are positive, stress-resilient and able to deliver high quality work on time;
  • You are confident operating in an international context with a high degree of cultural sensitivity, as part of complex research projects with a range of diverse stakeholders.

This is a full-time position and remuneration is competitive with civil society salaries at comparable experience level. The job holder will be based in E3G’s Berlin office. Start date is as soon as possible. The position will require business trips within Europe.
