Description

The Researcher will provide investigation and research expertise in Greenpeace’s ongoing or emerging campaign works in China as defined by the Campaign Director.

The Researcher is directly involved in the development and implementation of the investigation and research aspects of campaign projects, through working with campaign teams in China and globally.

The Researcher will be required to do both desktop research as well as on-the-field investigations to collect evidence or other relevant information on environmental problems, those who cause the problems or are affected by them.

The job requires attention to details, involves multiple concurrent daily deadlines and administrative tasks within the Action and Investigation Unit.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and implement effective research plans and strategies to help achieve campaign goals in an accurate, reliable and timely way.
  2. Provide research expertise for campaign projects. Keep abreast of issues. Conduct research work. Analyze new developments in specific issues to inform campaign decisions. Provide timely information relevant to the campaign projects through desktop or field research.
  3. Monitor, capture, filter and organize information and intelligence into databases, briefs and reports to ensure strategic information is available for Greenpeace’s campaigns.
  4. Research and analyze a wide range of specialized materials in relation to campaign projects. May be required to do media work.
  5. Advise management on acquiring research equipment. Help to maintain software and hardware which are related to research.
  6. Lead or assist in research training.
  7. Liaise with Greenpeace International and other national and regional office on research-related issues.
  8. Promote support within Greenpeace to advance research and campaign goals. Organize scouting trip activities and other investigation activities. Prepare materials and publications. Make presentations/brief paper and respond to internal or external speaking/meetings/discussion requests. Issue proper timely media responses if needed.

  3. Planning Skills and Flexibility: to work within teams to develop new research approaches/tools and advance campaign goals and objectives.
  4. Research and Analytical Skills: Very strong ability to monitor, capture, filter and organize media information and market intelligence into databases as well as to evaluate information, plan strategies and anticipate ramifications. Proven high skill level of on-line research expertise and content analysis
  5. Problem Solving Skills: Highly developed ability to problem solve, utilising multiple analytical techniques within a focused results orientation. Highly stress resistance during scouting trip or doing field work
  6. Interpersonal, Negotiating and Communications Skills: to work with others teams; to facilitate public speaking engagements and interactions with other groups and stakeholders; to gain new allies and promote coalition work; to deal with the media.
  7. Tact and Enthusiasm: to function effectively within a highly charged atmosphere, under public scrutiny.
  8. Computer Skills: Highly developed proficiency in computer use, including database, spreadsheet, word processing, on-line searching tools.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Knowledge of the overall goals and intent of Greenpeace (including policies, guidelines, programs, campaigns and project activities):to lead investigation activities in support of the world's largest environmental protection group.
  2. Strong knowledge of global and domestic environmental / ecological issues in general and motivation: to achieve Greenpeace China environmental campaign objectives and to provide specialized on-line research and content analysis.
  3. Strong comprehension of the interconnected influences that culture, science, politics, economics, industry, media and social change dynamics play in environmental issues: to gain a highly developed political and strategic awareness
