Job Description
The Joint Global Change Research Institute is seeking a Research Scientist to contribute to its growing program in the area of societal-environmental interactions. The incumbent will participate in ongoing research studies assessing vulnerability to climate change, economic development and resilience building, and decision-making related to environmental change. The incumbent will also contribute to development of proposals for new research projects related to environmental change influences on society; perceptions of environmental risk; interaction of environmental change and natural resources management; how individuals and societies respond to environmental change at various levels of organization and action; and the influence that scientific information, values, perceptions, institutions, and other factors have on environmental decision-making. The position has opportunity for growth. 
Responsibilities & Accountabilities 
The selected candidate will participate in a research program on assessment, analysis and management of vulnerability and resilience to global environmental change. Specific research tasks will include conducting case study research on socioeconomic and environmental impacts of climate change and identifying generalizable relationships across case studies to develop quantitative and comparative analyses of vulnerability and resilience. The candidate will also conduct quantitative analyses including conceptualizing and implementing revisions and extensions to socioeconomic and environmental indicators. 
Minimum Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years experience or a Master’s degree with 0-2 years experience or a Ph.D. is required. Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. All staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States.
Qualifications
Advanced degree in public policy, social sciences or a related field, Ph.D. preferred. Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative approaches for analysis of impacts, vulnerability, resilience, and adaptation to global environmental change and/or knowledge of socioeconomic development, environmental security, or other related areas is also required. Quantitative skills related to development of composite social and environmental indicators including data development and management, statistical analysis, and visualization. Familiarity with geographic information systems is a plus. Knowledge of and experience in applying stakeholder research methods including interviewing, focus groups, survey research, and other methods is desired.
