Future society based on sustainable development, where the re-use is of central importance. Materials reuse, efficient use of secondary flows as well as more efficient recovery technologies provide the basis for the sustainable exploitation of natural resources and thus creating a process, in which Finland is known as a role model for clean technologies.

VTT has a strong position in material, manufacturing and energy technologies in the globally. Use of raw material reserves is also facing changes in the Nordic countries and the global competitiveness will require new innovations to improve the competitiveness of the sector.

Finnish investments in bio-and mineral-based natural resource sector provides innovative use of the excellent and extensive opportunities for added value products. New innovations are born from a strong contribution to the scientific and technological expertise at the interface. The professorship is to strengthen the VTT's international competitiveness and visibility of scientific expertise in sustainable development, reuse materials, product-based solutions. The goal is a comprehensive industrial ecology concept development, including material flow management throughout the product life cycle, a special focus on the development of new recycling technologies.

Research Professor is required to provide strong scientific evidence of Materials and / or process engineering, as well as side-streams for recovery and processing sub-regions. In the successful management experience is required sustainability assessments and industrial ecology knowledge. In particular, calls for strong industry and business knowledge, strong evidence for International Cooperation, working at the interface of industry and large-scale international project modules. Industry experience is considered as merit.
